History & Founders
Forty years ago, Carol Lavin Bernick transformed gratitude into action and sparked a movement that continues to shape the future of women’s healthcare. After bringing home her healthy newborn following a long and difficult journey, Carol was determined to give back to the hospital that made that outcome possible. From that moment of gratitude came a powerful idea: to invest in innovation, research, and care that would improve the lives of women for generations to come.
Carol founded Friends of Prentice with a small group of committed leaders, including Patty Henderson, George McCarthy and Dr. Michael Socol. What began as a single inspired idea quickly gained momentum, bringing together individuals from all backgrounds - patients, physicians, and community leaders - united by a shared belief in advancing women’s health.
Friends of Prentice exists because of that original spark and the decades of dedication that followed. Since 1985, the organization has made a tangible, measurable impact across all stages of women’s healthcare by supporting early-stage research and innovation. The continued involvement of founding members stands as a testament to the enduring strength of Carol’s vision.
Today, Friends of Prentice remains committed to that founding purpose.
